While Motorola continued to expand its DynaTAC 8000 phones in the 1980s, Nokia launched its first cell phone in 1987. The Mobira Cityman 900 improved on what its competitor was offering with a device of smaller weight and measurements: 760 grams and 18.3 centimeters high by 4.3 centimeters wide and 7.9 centimeters thick. Popularly known as “the Gorba” because of photographs of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, wearing the Mobira Cityman 900, he helped popularize the novel technology used in the 1987 blockbuster “Lethal Weapon,” starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.
