THE ABBREVIATED “A” CORRESPONDS TO ABRAHAM IN THE SIGNATURE NEXT TO THE SURNAME CHAPPE
In 1801, a fourth brother of Claude Chappe, Abraham, received a commission from Napoleon: the development of a telegraph that could operate across the English Channel to facilitate a possible invasion of England by the French army. Abraham built a large optical telegraph and it was successfully tested near Paris. Later, in 1803 this device was installed in Boulogne-sur-Mer at the Pas de Calais. In 1812 he again received a commission from Napoleon, this time it was the development of a mobile telegraph for military use. The emperor’s idea was to use it in the invasion of Russia.
In 1814, with the restoration of the monarchy, Abraham Chappe was honored with the Légion d’Honneur.
