Don Gustavo Mario De la Garza Ortega was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, on July 7, 1937. He participated as the Founder and Director of Televisión Independiente de México in 1960, breaking the television monopoly in Mexico. In the following years, he became the creator and developer of the mobile radiolocation system called Radio Beep. He was the Founder and President of the Council of Radio Beep, the first paging company in Latin America, founded in 1965. He is also the Founder and President of the Council of Marcatel, one of the four telecommunications companies in Mexico that survived and was founded in 1994. Marcatel was the first company to emerge after the privatization of the telecommunications sector in Mexico, breaking the telephony monopoly. It is the only fully globalized Latin American telecommunications company. Additionally, he has actively supported LULAC, the largest Latino civil rights group in the United States, working to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. He is the Founder and President of the “Beca Jorge García Abaroa, A.C.” Foundation Council, an organization that helps young students whose parents cannot afford the costs of their education. He is also involved with the Marcatel Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to contribute to the technological, social, and human development of our communities through health, sports, arts, and education programs and activities. He has sponsored the advancement and professionalization of young musical talents through scholarships for their studies in Europe. For over ten years, he sponsored the famous Marcatel Award in the International Piano Competition organized by Parnasoss. He was the founder and president of the Northeast section of CANIETI. In 2002, he was the National President of the same National Chamber of Information Technology, Electronics, and Telecommunications, CANIETI. He has received, among other awards, the Civic Merit Medal awarded by the State of Nuevo León, as well as the Pedro Maíz Arsuaga Presea in the Services category by CANACO Monterrey; the Dr. Carlos Canseco Recognition in the Company and Government category in March 2020 by the Monterrey Cumbres Rotary Club. He was awarded the Trofeo Regio for his outstanding career in the category of Business Development in February 2021. He is the founding President of the Patronato of the Nuevo León Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Advisory Council of the Rosa de los Vientos Cultural Center in San Nicolás de los Garza, N.L. In recognition of his extraordinary support to the educational community, the CONALEP institution in San Nicolás de los Garza was named after Gustavo M. De la Garza Ortega on September 30, 2021. He has been a speaker on “motivation” at Mexican and foreign universities for over twenty years. He is the author of two books: • “Persistence vs. Stubbornness” reflections of an entrepreneur. • “Inanis et vacua” profound reflections on his widowhood.
