Motorola StarTAC 8500
Considered the first clamshell phone in history, although NEC had previously released a phone with this shape, but with much less impact than the Motorola would get.
The StarTAC is the successor to the MicroTAC and, at the time of its launch, the smallest and lightest mobile phone you could buy. It weighed just 88 grams, measured 9.4 centimeters by 5.5 by 1.9 and featured a 2-inch TFT screen, GPS, and MP3 file support for $1,000, nearly $2,000 today. 60 million units were sold.
